The season of winter evokes many images in our minds, particularly images of snow, people bundled up in coats and scarves, and curling up in your favorite blanket with a good book and a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Sometimes, many people feel as if they will need to remain cooped up in their homes as much as possible during the winter months to avoid the cold, inclement weather, and potentially dangerous driving conditions until spring rolls around once more. Besides, what is there to do in the winter anyway?

Well, guess what? St. Louis has a plethora of things to do in the winter months, especially during the month of December! If you plan on staying in the St. Louis area during December, be sure to check out the events in and around St. Louis that we’ve outlined below!

Do you love the outdoors? Great news! Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean that you’re forced to stay indoors. Visit the outdoor skating rink at Steinberg Ice Rink in Forest Park. It’s open every day (yes, including Christmas!) until February 28, 2013, and skating fees are $6 for all who skate. You can also rent skates for $4.

If skating isn’t your thing, check out the St. Louis Zoo in Forest Park on Thursday, December 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Raja the bull Asian elephant’s 20th birthday! If you’d rather go for a nice walk in a beautiful neighborhood, then mark your calendars for the Lafayette Square Parlor Tour on Sunday, December 9! You can take a tour of some of St. Louis’s finest Victorian homes decorated for Christmas. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the tour.

Speaking of the outdoors, the Missouri Botanical Gardens are always a big hit any time of the year! You’ll find that there’s plenty to do there in December as well. From now until January 1, you can enjoy their annual Gardenland Express, which features model trains that wind their way through a miniature landscape bedecked with winter scenes and surrounded by poinsettias and other flowering plants.

Until January 2, you can also enjoy their Deck the Halls Wreath Exhibit, which features local floral designers’ wreaths that they created. The Deck the Halls Wreath Exhibit is free with the price of admission, but the Gardenland Express costs $5 per person.

Love music and the arts? You’re in the right city! On New Year’s Eve, ring in the New Year with an evening full of wonderful music performed by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra at the Powell Symphony Hall in Grand Center. If you’d prefer a little more rock ‘n’ roll, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra will be back in St. Louis at the Scott Trade Center once more on Thursday, December 27 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to perform.

For those who love the theatre, don’t miss the chance to see Wicked at the Fabulous Fox Theater! The world-famous show will be at the Fox from December 12 till January 6.

If you’re a fan of football, be sure to check out the St. Louis Rams on game days during December. The last home game of the regular season will be on Sunday, December 16 when they play the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. at the Edward Jones Dome.

Finally, for a fun adventure for the whole family, travel to the other side of the river to Belleville, Illinois to see the 43rd Annual Way of Lights Christmas Display at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. From now until Monday, December 31, you can drive through a beautiful scene of over one million lights, which wind past life-size figures and displays depicting the Christmas Story. You will also find an interactive children’s village, camel rides, wreath displays, and even an indoor laser show! You definitely won’t want to miss this event!

St. Louis and the surrounding area has so much to offer visitors and residents during the month of December that you definitely won’t need to be concerned with being bored at all! Choose one, a few, or all of these events to participate in this month, and you’ll find that St. Louis is a delightful place to stay!
