Transitioning from one home to the next is tiring. Especially when you’re moving to a whole new area. But, no matter how rough you think the move is, just imagine what its like for a child. Making new friends, learning the social norms and keeping up in schoolwork can be really hard. At Arch Interim Housing we make it our goal to make transition from homes as easy as possible- for everyone. Here are a few tips on how to make moving easier for your children.
One of the easiest ways to help your children with the move will be to join a local church. Whether it’s every Sunday or every couple of weeks
this interaction with your new community will be healthy for your child. Your family will meet new people and your child will have the opportunity to meet others their own age. Going into school on the first day and already having a friend could be one thing that makes their transition just a little bit easier. If your not sure where a church is in your area, you can ask a neighbor, look online or just drive around your town.
Another tip to make relocation with your child easier is to get your child involved with afterschool activities. Schools have all sorts of clubs, sports or after school programs; there’s bound to be one that your child will enjoy. If joining a sports team for a school is too much look into intramural or ones supported by your town. Being involved is not only a great way to help your child to meet friends but also for staying active and working on teambuilding and social skills.
The most important thing you can do is simply talk to your child. Let them know that you’re there for them if they have any questions, fears, etc. It’s really important to keep lines of communication open so that you can understand just how well your child is adjusting.
Relocating with children is tough; but it can go smoothly as long as you know how to do it. For daily updates from Arch Interim Housing, like us on facebook.com/archinterim.
